## Kaytranada on Tracklib 
 
There’s more to the collection than this sample library: Tracklib’s infamous [Sample Breakdown video series](https://www.tracklib.com/blog/sample-breakdown-overview) also includes a breakdown of Kaytranada’s “At All.” On top of that, Kaytranada himself dug deep into the Tracklib vaults to sample [LaWanda Page](https://www.tracklib.com/music/artists/lawanda-page)’s “The Pilot” for IDK’s 2022 single, “[Drugstore](https://www.tracklib.com/blog/hottest-flips-samples-2022).” The flip of the comedy skit is a great example of Kaytranada’s original take on music production. ## Early Influences

Kaytranada’s production work has always been heavily influenced by a wide range of [genres](https://www.tracklib.com/music/genres), from soul and funk to electronic music and hip-hop. However, in [an interview](https://splice.com/blog/kaytranada-future-of-funk) with Splice, he stated he “didn’t grow up listening to funk, but everything I listened to was probably influenced by it in some ways… I didn’t pay attention to the genre of funk until my early 20s,” then citing [Anderson Paak](https://www.tracklib.com/music/collections/504067), Bruno Mars, and Khruangbin as [artists](https://www.tracklib.com/music/artists) who take soul and funk to the next level.

With his newest outfit Kaytraminé together with singer/rapper Aminé, he shows the diverse influences in dancefloor-minded productions with a clear touch of soul, funk, and R&B. Never leaving a distinct hip-hop groove throughout. The album was even nominated in Tracklib’s [Sampling Awards 2023](https://www.tracklib.com/blog/sampling-awards-2023). 
 
## Sampling in Kaytranada's Music

Sampling is a fundamental element of hip-hop and electronic music production. Kaytranada's music is a prime example of the art of sampling. "We cannot let this sampling shit die. (...) I'll sample till I die," he shared on Twitter. He also told [Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1](https://musictech.com/news/music/kaytranada-zane-lowe-sample-jackson-5/) that he’s “still trying to keep [sampling] alive in a way, because I really miss samples, man. I really do miss the use of samples. A lot of people do it. [The Alchemist](https://www.tracklib.com/music/collections/287748) – people like that – are still doing it and I still want to keep that alive, especially in electronic music. It’s definitely an art form. It’s like a collage. Not everyone is going to get it.”

For similar sounds, some producers might argue that a Ta-Ku sample pack follows the same lineage as Kaytranada’s sample chops and funky sample usage.

### Hip-hop history
Ever since **DJ Muggs** of **Cypress Hill** mentored a young, dedicated Daniel Alan Maman, it was clear that he was set on a mission to become an iconic hip-hop producer. He first started out as part of the hip-hop duo **The Whooliganz**, under the moniker of Mudfoot. Check out the music video for “Put Your Handz Up” to see a seventeen-year-old The Alchemist rapping. The hip-hop duo caught the attention of Cypress Hill’s **B-Real**, and the rest is hip-hop history. What also helped, is that The Alchemist was part of a vibrant Los Angeles scene, going to the same school as the likes of **Evidence** (later of **Dilated Peoples**) and [Quincy Jones](https://www.tracklib.com/blog/raycharles-samples-blues-rnb-soul-downbeat)' son, **Quincy Jones III**. Through passion and hard work, he made it into the studio with [J Dilla](https://www.tracklib.com/music/collections/225086), [DJ Premier](https://www.tracklib.com/blog/samplelike-djpremier-sowassup-samplebreakdowns), and **D'Angelo** at the age of twenty-one. 
 
### Collaboration with artists

The Alchemist's sampling techniques are as varied as they are complex. He employs a range of methods, from traditional chopping and looping to more intricate manipulations that alter pitch, tempo, and texture to fit his artistic vision. This creative process, highlighted in collaborations with artists such as [Kendrick Lamar](https://www.tracklib.com/music/collections/225090), **Boldy James**, **Westside Gunn**, **Conway The Machine**, **Freddie Gibbs**, and most recently **Schoolboy Q**, showcases his ability to breathe new life into original songs.
