Want to get some inspiration from the sound of the Dirty South? In this video, CeeLo Green reminisces about the early days of Goodie Mob and the Dungeon Family, Andre 3000’s speech at the notorious The Source Awards 1995, and recording Goodie Mob’s debut album Soul Food that year in Curtis Mayfield’s home studio.
“Sampling is an essential element of hip-hop. It's the bridge between generations. Some of this music could disappear into obscurity. You may never encounter it unless you're introduced to it [through samples].”
—CeeLo Green
Amidst the heated East Coast vs. West Coast rivalry in the mid-90s, another hip-hop storm was brewing down south: a new scene was emerging in Atlanta with the Dungeon Family collective as pivotal figures. Rapper and singer CeeLo Green was one of those pioneers together with his group Goodie Mob, and like-minded artists including Outkast and production team Organized Noize. Together they paved the way for Southern “Dirty South” hip-hop as we know it since.
As a solo artist, CeeLo Green released two albums in the early 2000s before forming the sample-driven neo-soul duo Gnarls Barkley together with producer Danger Mouse. They're best known for their debut single (and biggest hit) "Crazy" off 2006's platinum-selling album St. Elsewhere. CeeLo continued his solo career in 2010, with the Bruno Mars-penned "Fuck You" as his biggest solo hit to date.
