Artist
American professor of literature, a Baptist minister and composer of gospel hymns (March 12, 1826 – November 25, 1899).
Lowry studied theology at the University at Lewisburg (now Bucknell University), where he became a professor of literature. He was ordained as a Baptist minister and was pastor at several churches in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey.
He is most remembered as a composer of gospel music and a hymn writer, and also worked as a music editor at the Biglow & Main Publishing Company. He wrote about 500 Gospel tunes.
